Rabbit Blanket Lake Canoe Route

Intermediate

About

This overnight trip starts at Rabbit Blanket Lake Campground in Lake Superior Provincial Park, at kilometre 1049.6 of Highway 17. Paddlers launch on Rabbit Blanket Lake, where the campground rents canoes, and work through a chain of lakes to Surf Lake before returning the same way, about 16 km in all. Ontario Parks counts three portages of 250 m to 1,200 m and calls the carries into Peat, Sundstrom and Surf lakes demanding; the two longest are about 1,000 m and 1,200 m, so pack to carry. Brook trout live in these lakes, and the area is known for moose sightings. A backcountry camping permit is needed for the night out, and summer weekends are best reserved ahead.
