Terms of Use

The short version. CanoeMap is a planning tool, not a navigation tool. Rivers change. Whitewater grades are not exact, water levels move daily, portages wash out, and land rules change. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle, and make your own decisions on the water. You are responsible for your own trip.

What this site is

CanoeMap.ca assembles canoe route information from open government data and community route documentation into one map. It is intended to help you research and plan trips. It is not a substitute for current local knowledge, official notices, up-to-date charts, or your own judgment on the water.

No warranty of accuracy

We work hard on data quality. Every route line is matched to a named watercourse in government hydrographic data, and we refuse to publish coordinates read off scanned maps. Even so, we make no warranty that any information on this site is accurate, complete, or current. Positions can be wrong, features can be missing, and conditions on the ground override anything shown here. If something on the map disagrees with what you see on the water, trust the water.

Whitewater ratings

Difficulty grades on this site are approximate and many are estimates rather than surveyed values. A tilde (~) marks an estimated grade. Whitewater ratings are not exact on any map: the same rapid can be a different class at a different water level, in a different season, or after a single storm. Scout rapids before running them, portage when in doubt, and never rely on a published grade as a guarantee of what you will find.

Land and camping information

Layers showing Crown land or public land show land tenure only. Tenure is not permission to camp. Camping rules differ by province, by land designation, and over time, and parks and conservation reserves inside Crown land carry their own rules. Confirm the rules with the responsible authority before you camp.

Data sources and licences

This site is built on open data: the National Hydro Network and CanVec (Natural Resources Canada, Open Government Licence - Canada), the Canadian Geographical Names Database, Land Information Ontario (Open Government Licence - Ontario), OpenStreetMap (ODbL), and community route documentation including cartespleinair.org. Full credits are on the attribution page.

CanoeMap is an independent project of Thrive Adventures Inc. It is not affiliated with, operated by, or endorsed by any government body or data provider named above.
