Gamitagama Lake to Old Woman Lake and Sand River

Advanced Whitewater: Class I-II

About

This is Lake Superior Provincial Park's recommended route to Old Woman Lake, and it can continue down the Sand River to Highway 17. Paddlers start at the Gamitagama access on Gamitagama Road, which leaves Highway 17 at kilometre 1062.9; parking there is limited. From Gamitagama the route runs south through a string of small lakes on steep, uneven portages to Old Woman Lake, a two- to three-day return trip. Carrying on through Black, Wildcat and other lakes to the Sand River makes it a four- to six-day one-way trip that ends just above Lake Superior at Highway 17. The Sand River has class I-II rapids, each with a portage, and two waterfalls, Calwin and Lady Evelyn, that must be carried. Wind and waves can pin paddlers on Gamitagama and Old Woman lakes. Brook trout and lake trout draw anglers, and camping requires a backcountry permit.
