The Michipicoten Water Trail is the Trans Canada Trail's paddling route along Lake Superior's open coast between Pukaskwa National Park and Michipicoten Provincial Park, ending at Michipicoten Bay near Wawa. It forms the final leg of the roughly 200 km coastal trip from Hattie Cove in Pukaskwa, which takes 10 to 14 days. Parks Canada's 10-day itinerary covers it in the last four days, from Imogene Cove with nights at Pipe River, Floating Heart River and Dog River, ending at the Michipicoten River. South of the Pukaskwa River the shore is Crown land, where Canadian residents camp free and non-residents need a Crown land camping permit. The coast is roadless, so plan a boat shuttle. Parks Canada says the route is only for paddlers experienced in big open water. Expect water barely above 10°C, fog that can last days, and wind-bound days, up to three in five in late summer.
