About

The Hawkesbury-des-Baies circuit is a 112 km lake route in the western part of Réserve faunique La Vérendrye, rated advanced by Sépaq and planned as a ten-day trip. It starts at Baie Barker on Grand lac Victoria; the launch can no longer be reached by car, so a 350 m portage leads to the water. A 25 km out-and-back section joins an 83 km loop, which Sépaq recommends paddling clockwise. Lac Cawasachouane and Lac Hénault are long, narrow lakes whose many islands give shelter even in strong wind, and between Lac Hénault and Lac des Baies a string of small lakes is joined by short portages. Sépaq counts 14 portages totalling about 4.6 km, one class I rapid and one falls, and spaces 21 campsites about 8 km apart. The circuit must be booked with Sépaq before arrival.
