The Steel River is a legendary whitewater expedition in far northern Ontario, renowned for its powerful Class III-IV rapids and dramatic drops through pristine Shield country. Paddlers encounter extensive whitewater sections interspersed with scenic flatwater, abundant moose and black bear, and exceptional solitude. Access via floatplane to remote headwaters is mandatory. Best paddled June-August during high water; only for expedition-experienced paddlers with superior whitewater skills and comprehensive wilderness self-sufficiency capabilities.
