The White River is a demanding whitewater route in far northern Ontario featuring significant rapids and challenging portages through remote wilderness. The river descends through Shield and lowland terrain toward James Bay with excellent potential for moose, bear, and eagle sightings. Access typically requires floatplane support. Best paddled during late June through August when water levels are high enough to run major rapids. Only suitable for experienced expedition paddlers with advanced technical skills and comfort in true wilderness isolation.
Part of this route, roughly 28 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Pokei Lake/White River Wetlands Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
White River Canoe Route is estimated at Advanced. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is June-August.
