About

Smoothwater Lake Route provides canoe access through Ontario's highest lands to Ishpatina Ridge and the Aurora Trout Lakes, a nature reserve protecting the extremely rare Aurora trout found nowhere else on Earth. This 12-day wilderness loop (200+ km) through the northwestern corner of Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Park involves numerous arduous portages connecting pristine highland lakes including Smoothwater's famed sandy beach and remote Scarecrow Lake. The route demands strong intermediate to advanced skills and should only be attempted by experienced paddlers prepared for challenging terrain and complete wilderness isolation from summer through early fall.
