About

Wakimika Lake Loop is a classic five-day canoe route in Temagami's heart linking Diamond, Wakimika, and Obabika lakes through a mix of pristine clear-water lakes and gentle river paddling suitable for novice to intermediate paddlers. The route showcases some of Temagami's largest stands of old-growth red and white pine forest, with the protected Wakimika Triangle offering day-hiking through ancient trees and access to Indigenous spiritual sites. Four well-maintained portages (all under 900 metres) connect scenic campsites, and wind delays are possible on larger lake sections. Access is convenient from Central Lake Temagami Road, and paddling in early or late season offers better solitude than summer peaks.

Crown land along this route

Part of this route, roughly 18 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Obabika River Provincial Park / Bob Lake Conservation Reserve, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
