Makobe River is an intermediate to advanced spring whitewater paddling route featuring 34 Class I-II rapids totalling seven kilometres of runnable whitewater compressed into a dramatic short journey through narrow canyons with rugged granite cliffs and Canadian Shield bedrock. In spring during optimal conditions (mid-May to mid-June), experienced paddlers enjoy technical rapids requiring careful scouting; by summer, water levels drop significantly making it flatwater with moving sections and numerous portages. The river flows north through a scenic 1,420-hectare park from Makobe Lake toward Elk Lake over just two to three days via floatplane access. Few paddlers attempt this remote whitewater classic, making it a solitude-focused expedition.
About 100 percent of this route lies inside Makobe-Grays River Provincial Park.
Crown land free camping does not apply here. Provincial parks and conservation reserves set their own rules: designated sites, permits and reservations. Check with the responsible authority before you go.
