Haliburton Highlands Water Trails River

About

The Haliburton Highlands Water Trails are a backcountry canoe network run by the Township of Algonquin Highlands on about 28,000 hectares of Crown and municipal land south of Dorset. The Frost Centre area, reached from 11 access points, most of them off Highway 35, links more than 60 lakes with 70 portages and 171 canoe-access campsites, and suits trips of two or three days. The trails office sits at the former Frost Centre, 12 km south of Dorset. The smaller Poker Lakes area, entered from Highway 118 west of Carnarvon, has 12 lakes, 10 portages and 47 sites. Published routes run from about 7 km to 30 km. Camping requires a reservation through the township's online system, paid in full when you book, and the booking number serves as your permit. Sites have a fire pit and a privy, and the township expects paddlers to navigate by map and compass.
