Grundy Lake Canoe Route

About

Grundy Lake Provincial Park lies near Britt, at the junction of Highways 69 and 522 in the Parry Sound District, and its interior route links a chain of small Canadian Shield lakes. Paddlers cross Gurd Lake heading north, portage 650 m on a rough trail into Beaver Lake, and continue over a few short carries to Pakeshkag Lake; the provincial trail inventory maps the route at about 7 km. The Pakeshkag Lake Trail doubles as a portage: walk 1.2 km of it to reach Beaver Lake, or all 2.6 km to reach Pakeshkag Lake directly. The park has ten backcountry campsites reached by canoe, and they require a backcountry camping permit. Beyond Pakeshkag Lake, the Pakeshkag River winds north toward Cantin Lake and the Pickerel River through beaver dams and tight bends that call for poling and lift-overs, so check conditions with the park first.
