Bonney Lakes Canoe Route

About

The Bonney Lakes Canoe Route is a short circuit of five lakes off Highway 37 in northwest British Columbia, managed by Recreation Sites and Trails BC. It starts and finishes on Bonney Lake, where a small rustic recreation site with two campsites, tables and toilets sits on a point at the north end, and a 25 m trail leads to the launch. Portages are basic, brushed out and marked; the route map shows five, from 45 m to 740 m. The loop can be paddled in a day, though paddlers may camp at small user-maintained sites along the way. Access is by gravel forest roads: about 34 km on the Orenda FSR from the Elsworth camp, roughly 136 km north of Kitwanga, or about 35 km on the Brown Bear FSR from a turnoff about 110 km north of Kitwanga. A vehicle with good clearance is recommended, and bears live in the area.
