Georgian Bay (Killarney)

Philip Edward Island Circumnavigation River

Intermediate

About

Philip Edward Island lies off the Georgian Bay shore just south of Killarney Provincial Park, and a trip around it covers about 50 km. Most groups launch at the Chikanishing access point at the end of Chikanishing Road off Highway 637, where overnight parking needs a Killarney Provincial Park permit from the George Lake office; the town docks in Killarney are another start. The north and east sides follow sheltered Collins Inlet, while the south side faces open Georgian Bay, and side trips to the Fox or Hawk islands add exposed crossings. Northern Ontario Travel suggests travelling counter-clockwise because of the prevailing winds and allowing five to seven days, though three is possible. The island is Crown land, so you camp on established sites without booking; non-residents of Canada need a Crown land camping permit. Wind and waves on the Bay are the main hazard, and bears can swim out to the islands.
