Big Creek Canoe Route

About

Big Creek runs south through the Carolinian forest of Norfolk County, feeds the marshes of the Big Creek National Wildlife Area and empties into Long Point's Inner Bay on Lake Erie. The stretch most paddlers run goes about 9 km from Rowan Mills Conservation Area down to the County Road 42 bridge at Port Royal, a trip of three to four hours. It is one-way, and you cannot paddle back upstream, so leave a vehicle or bike at Port Royal. Fallen trees and log jams are common, and near Rowan Mills a sign marks a mandatory portage; get out there and stay off the jam. Spring high water brings fast current and is not recommended, while low fall water exposes steep banks that make landing hard. Sycamore and black walnut shade the banks, and paddlers may see bald eagles, beaver and deer. Paddling the creek is free.
