The Winnipeg River is Manitoba's most iconic multi-purpose waterway, offering 475 km of paddling from the Winnipeg River mouth near the Ontario border through lakes, boreal forest, and multiple hydroelectric dams to Winnipeg itself. This route combines urban accessibility with genuine backcountry paddling, featuring scenic rock formations, excellent walleye and northern pike fishing, and manageable Class I–II rapids between dam pools. The river is divided into multiple trip segments suitable for everyone from families (calm lake sections) to intermediate paddlers (Class II sections); best paddled May–September with peak conditions June–August. Dam scheduling and portages require advance planning, but the route's flexibility and accessibility make it Manitoba's most-paddled major waterway.
