The White River delivers an exceptional intermediate whitewater canoe experience over 70 km to Lake Superior just south of Marathon. This paddle combines thrilling Class II rapids with magnificent waterfalls including the harnessed Umbatta Falls, sweeping meanders through wildlife-rich backwaters, and awe-inspiring canyon vistas. Beginning at White Lake Provincial Park, the route flows year-round due to water management, allowing flexible seasonal planning. Portages navigate around major drops while the gradient provides non-stop action for paddlers seeking whitewater without extreme difficulty.
Part of this route, roughly 22 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Pokei Lake/White River Wetlands Provincial Park / Kwinkwaga Ground Moraine Uplands Conservation Reserve, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
