Thirty Mile, Yukon River

About

The Canadian Heritage Rivers System page for the Thirty Mile covers a 48 km section of the Yukon River from the outflow of Lake Laberge, 96 km north of Whitehorse, to the Teslin River confluence at Hootalinqua. Designated in 1991, this narrow channel, 50 to 100 m wide, has a strong current, shifting shoals and rocks that wrecked many paddlewheelers. Paddlers pass clear blue-green water, sand and gravel bluffs close to 100 m high, and the abandoned gold rush settlements of Lower Laberge and Hootalinqua. Yukon Parks campsites include Johnston Island and Hootalinqua, and the S.S. Evelyn lies on Shipyard Island.
