Temagami River is a premier intermediate to advanced whitewater destination offering four to seven days of progressive paddling difficulty on a single river system, starting as easy flatwater lake paddling on Lake Temagami and gradually building to Class I, II, and III rapids toward the finish. The river showcases excellent scenery with old-growth forests, granite cliffs, and top-notch campsites throughout, ending with a relaxing float downstream to River Valley Bluegrass Park. While exciting rapids provide adrenaline, the route's real appeal is the progressive warm-up allowing paddlers to build skills and enjoy pristine Temagami wilderness. Best paddled May through September; shorter day-trip options exist from mid-river access points.
Part of this route, roughly 15 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Temagami River Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
Temagami River is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is May-September.
Temagami River is located in the Northeastern Ontario region of Canada.
