The Schroon River provides diverse paddling opportunities from gentle flatwater family trips to exciting Class III whitewater adventures in the southeastern Adirondacks. The popular Devon to Lake section offers 4 miles of easy current perfect for beginners, while the Starbuckville to Riverbank stretch features challenging standing waves and the famous "Big Drop" rapid for experienced paddlers. Surrounded by forested hills with excellent trout fishing, the river flows through scenic landscapes with minimal development between access points. Best paddled May through September, with multiple access points along Route 9 and well-established shuttle services available.
