The Saugeen River is one of Southern Ontario's most beloved canoe destinations, offering 102 km of scenic paddling through rural countryside and beautiful river valleys. This beginner-to-intermediate route features gentle flowing water, class 1-2 rapids, and four manageable portages around dams, making it accessible to paddlers of various skill levels. The landscape transitions from forested sections to agricultural lands and dramatic clay bluffs, particularly near Saugeen Bluffs Conservation Area. Summer conditions are ideal for family paddling, with numerous campsites available at conservation areas and riverside towns offering resupply opportunities. The route typically takes 3-4 days to complete from Hanover to Southampton on Lake Huron.
This route runs through crown land for nearly its whole length. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
