The Sachigo River Route from Sachigo Lake to Fort Severn is one of North America's last true wilderness river expeditions, a remote paddle through undeveloped muskeg and boreal forest toward Hudson Bay. Starting from a floatplane access point, paddlers descend a river that gradually widens from 75-100 metres to over 1 kilometre, encountering Class 1-3 rapids scattered throughout and significant Class 2+ sections, particularly in the Sachigo's middle reaches. Wildlife is exceptional including moose, beaver, geese, and potentially polar bears near journey's end. The landscape is raw and primal with low muskeg terrain and occasional rocky outcrops, demanding experienced backcountry skills, self-sufficiency, and serious preparation. Best paddled August for stable water levels.
This route runs through crown land for nearly its whole length. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
