The Pikitigushi River Route offers a remote backcountry wilderness experience in Wabakimi Provincial Park with a mix of calm lakes and moderate whitewater through pristine boreal forest and rocky terrain. The route provides excellent fishing opportunities for walleye and pike, with scenic portaging through undeveloped landscape and exposure to northern wildlife including moose and eagles. Best paddled June through September when water levels are navigable and weather permits; early September provides cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Access via Armstrong area with train or vehicle shuttle enables week-long wilderness adventures for intermediate to advanced paddlers.
About 78 percent of this route runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Whitesand Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
Pikitigushi River Route is estimated at Advanced. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is June-September.
Pikitigushi River Route is located in the Northwestern Ontario region of Canada.
