Path of the Paddle is the water route of the Trans Canada Trail across Northwestern Ontario, a chain of lakes, rivers, creeks and portages from Lake Superior at Thunder Bay to Whiteshell Provincial Park, just inside Manitoba. Volunteer regional trail committees keep it open, working with the Path of the Paddle Association. The association gives the system as about 1,110 km in six named sections: Animikii, Omimi, Quetico, Maukinak, Migizi and Iinoo Oowan. Tourism sources cite anywhere from 1,000 to 1,180 km and about 152 portages. Portages carry Trans Canada Trail and Path of the Paddle signs, and planning and detailed maps show access points and portage lengths. Few paddlers do the whole route in one trip; most choose a single section for a day, a weekend or a week. The trail crosses Crown land and provincial parks, including Quetico, and follows border waters beside Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The difficulty of Path of the Paddle River varies by section. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
