The Ogoki River Route is a remote wilderness paddling experience in northwestern Ontario through pristine boreal forest and rocky Canadian Shield terrain characterized by challenging rapids, scenic lakes, and exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. The route features whitewater ranging from Class I-III depending on water levels and section chosen, with multiple portages around falls and challenging river sections requiring solid intermediate-to-advanced paddling skills. Access via floatplane or train provides the necessary remoteness; best paddled July-August when water levels stabilize. This route rewards experienced adventurers with solitude, excellent walleye fishing, and encounters with moose, bear, and eagles.
This route runs through crown land for nearly its whole length. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
Ogoki River Route is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is July-September.
Ogoki River Route is located in the Northwestern Ontario region of Canada.
