The Moose River is a remote northern Ontario wilderness river flowing from interior boreal forests through a relatively undeveloped landscape to James Bay. This is an advanced, multi-week expedition paddle featuring tidal influences, extensive flatwater sections, pristine boreal wildlife viewing opportunities (moose, caribou, bears, wolves), and minimal services. Access requires fly-in support and strong expedition paddling skills; limited documented campsites and challenging logistics make it suitable only for experienced wilderness expeditioners. Best paddled July-August during brief window when ice is clear.
Part of this route, roughly 14 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
Moose River Canoe Route is estimated at Advanced. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
