The Magnetawan River loop offers a diverse paddling experience flowing through Algonquin's northwest region. Novice paddlers appreciate the accessible jump-off point at Magnetawan Lake with manageable portages connecting stunning backcountry lakes like Hambone and Ralph Bice. The river section presents Class I-III rapids during spring high water, creating moderate whitewater excitement, while summer levels offer gentler paddling. Forested shorelines showcase Canadian Shield scenery, and solitude is readily available away from Highway 60 crowds. Best paddled in June-September for lake sections; May offers peak whitewater.
Part of this route, roughly 31 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Algonquin Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
Magnetawan Lake Loop is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
