The Upper Liard River in the Yukon is a remote wilderness paddling experience beginning at Caribou Lake and descending 125 miles of clearwater river through the Cassiar and Pelly Mountains. Paddling difficulty is easy to moderate (Class I-II) with straightforward flatwater sections and gentle rapids; the main hazards include occasional logjams and sweepers rather than technical whitewater. Scenery is stunning with high mountain peaks, willow meadows, abundant moose sightings, and excellent fishing for arctic grayling and bull trout. Best paddled July-August for stable water levels and opportunities to witness the midnight sun and aurora borealis. Access requires floatplane or guided outfitter arrangement from Whitehorse.
