Lakeland Canoe Circuit

About

The Lakeland Canoe Circuit is a flatwater loop in Lakeland Provincial Park, east of Lac La Biche in northeastern Alberta, and Alberta Parks calls it the province's only backcountry canoe circuit. The main loop links Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin lakes over about 38 km and takes around three days; Alberta Parks rates it an easy paddle. Most people start at the Jackson Lake Staging Area on Highway 663, about 30 minutes east of Lac La Biche, with a portage of roughly 3 km to Jackson Lake. Trip reports describe a muddier 1.6 km carry from Blackett to McGuffin and a 400 m one from McGuffin back to Jackson. Canoe carts are kept at portages on the main circuit, though one may not be waiting at every trailhead. The backcountry camping areas have fire pits, composting toilets and bear poles or lockers, cost nothing and cannot be reserved. Wind can raise a chop fast, especially on Jackson Lake.
