Renowned as Ontario's 'Trout Streams,' the Lady Evelyn River is a spectacular 100 km wilderness canoe route through rugged highlands featuring four arms and multiple waterfalls including the Golden Staircase and natural waterslides. This challenging route demands experienced portaging skills as paddlers navigate steep, slippery carries around dramatic cascades while passing through old-growth pine forests near Temagami's highest points. The river's twin branches allow for upstream-then-downstream loop variations; best paddled in spring for whitewater, though navigable all summer through to early fall.
About 70 percent of this route lies inside East Lady Evelyn Lake Conservation Reserve / Obabika River Provincial Park.
Crown land free camping does not apply here. Provincial parks and conservation reserves set their own rules: designated sites, permits and reservations. Check with the responsible authority before you go.
Lady Evelyn River Route is estimated at Advanced. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is May-September (spring for whitewater).
Lady Evelyn River Route is located in the Northeastern Ontario region of Canada.
