About

The La Grande River system, known as Chisasibi in Cree meaning 'great river', flows 900 kilometers through northwestern Quebec to James Bay, making it the second-longest river in the province. However, extensive hydroelectric development has dramatically altered its character, with diversions increasing its catchment area to about 175,000 km² and mean discharge to more than 3,400 m³/s. While the massive reservoirs offer some paddling opportunities with controlled access, the natural river experience has been largely compromised. Navigation and transportation by canoes and small motorboats, sightseeing and tourism are still possible in certain sections. This preliminary assessment suggests limited recreational value compared to undeveloped waterways.
