About

The historic Kaministiquia River Canoe Route follows the original voyageur fur trade pathway from Fort William (Thunder Bay) westward to Lac La Croix, covering 135 miles through pristine boreal wilderness. This moderately difficult route features the iconic Kakabeka Falls, Ontario's second-highest waterfall, and combines scenic flatwater paddling through Dog River and winding creeks with several portages including the challenging 3-mile Prairie Portage at Height of Land. Access is easy from Thunder Bay with equipment rentals available; best paddled June through September when water levels are manageable and weather is stable.

Crown land along this route

Part of this route, roughly 32 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
