The French River flows 110 kilometres from Lake Nipissing west to Georgian Bay, offering canoeists fantastic scenery and more than 250 campsites. Once a major travel route for First Nations, fur trappers and loggers, this river is Canada's first designated heritage river. A real benefit of a French River canoe trip is there are few portages; all rapids can be portaged, and many can be run, depending on water levels and how comfortable you are paddling in whitewater. The classic route from Wolseley Bay to Highway 69 takes 4-6 days and showcases excellent campsites and beautiful Canadian Shield terrain.
About 100 percent of this route lies inside French River Provincial Park.
Crown land free camping does not apply here. Provincial parks and conservation reserves set their own rules: designated sites, permits and reservations. Check with the responsible authority before you go.
French River Canoe Route is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is May-October.
French River Canoe Route is located in the Northern Ontario region of Canada.
