The historic Eastmain River offers a journey through Quebec's fur trading heritage, flowing 800 kilometers from the Otish Mountains to James Bay. The first two weeks on the river included wonderful whitewater, stunning canyons, waterfalls and chutes, though sections are heavily impacted by Hydro-Québec diversions. Upper reaches provide excellent wilderness camping and fishing opportunities among the pristine Canadian Shield landscape. However, most of the waters have been diverted and the remainder contains only about 10 percent of its former flow. Advanced planning and water level research are essential as the river's character varies dramatically depending on location and season.
