The Eagle River Canoe Route is a moderately challenging route through Sunset Country connecting scenic lakes with Class I-II rapids and multiple portages in boreal forest setting. This route is less popular than major destinations, offering solitude and pristine wilderness with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and fishing. The route includes approximately 20 portages with some extended carries, and paddlers should seek local knowledge before departing. Access from the Atikokan area with outfitter support available; best paddled July-September when water conditions are favorable and insect pressure is reduced.
Part of this route, roughly 12 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
