The Coal River is a remote adventure combining pristine wilderness with moderate whitewater in a relatively compact trip. This 120km journey mixes about 90km of scenic flatwater paddling through forested limestone plateaus with a rewarding 10km whitewater canyon section near the take-out, offering excellent opportunities to spot moose and other northern wildlife. The river begins with accessible logistics from the Alaska Highway (take-out is paved highway-adjacent) but requires portaging through alpine lakes and creek systems to reach the main river. Best paddled August-September when water levels are ideal. This is a true expedition river offering solitude and pristine boreal scenery for intermediate to experienced paddlers.
