The Batchawana River offers a thrilling 4-day spring expedition dropping through spectacular Algoma wilderness to Lake Superior. This Class I-II whitewater river features five portages around waterfalls and rapids that demand careful scout-and-run decisions. Access via the iconic Algoma Central Railway adds to the adventure; the entire route flows rapidly through beautiful country toward Highway 17. Peak water levels occur in May and early June, making timing critical. Advanced whitewater skills are essential due to hazardous sections and swift current.
Part of this route, roughly 12 percent, runs through crown land. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules. Part of this route lies inside Batchawana River Provincial Park, where those free-camping rules do not apply.
Batchawana River Canoe Route is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
