The Barron Canyon Route is a stunning day-trip or overnight adventure featuring dramatic 100-metre canyon walls rising directly from dark waters of the Barron River, one of Ontario's most visually striking paddling destinations. Accessed via Squirrel Rapids parking lot near Sand Lake Gate in the remote east side, this beginner-friendly paddle upstream through towering white pines and limestone cliffs rewards with breathtaking river views. The complementary Barron Canyon Trail hike (1.5 km) offers equally dramatic perspectives from above. Best paddled in shoulder seasons to avoid crowds; the narrow gorge and granite walls create magical light photography opportunities and genuine wilderness immersion despite being technically accessible.
