The Attawapiskat River is a gem of northern Ontario, offering 748 kilometres of dramatic paddling through Shield granite and pristine James Bay lowlands. Expect exciting Class II-III rapids, particularly where the river drops into limestone formations and creates the iconic 'Birthday Cake' islands near the mouth. The remote route sees only 2-3 paddling parties per season, offering genuine solitude and clear water. Best paddled July-August; access by floatplane from Pickle Lake area with pre-arranged logistics and shuttle coordination essential.
This route runs through crown land for nearly its whole length. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
