The Albany River is a remote 354-km northern Ontario wilderness paddle flowing through pristine boreal landscape from interior lakes to James Bay. This advanced multi-week expedition features long flatwater sections, tidal influences, exceptional wildlife (moose, polar bears, caribou), and minimal human development. Fly-in access, extreme remoteness, limited campsite documentation, and challenging logistics restrict this to experienced wilderness expeditioners with strong navigation and self-rescue skills. Best paddled July-August during the brief ice-free window; this is a true northern wilderness experience.
This route runs through crown land for nearly its whole length. Crown land is public land. In Ontario a resident of Canada may camp on most of it for free, up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. Being crown land is not the same as being open to camping: a provincial park or conservation reserve follows different rules.
Albany River Canoe Route is estimated at Advanced. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
