Grand Lake - Achray is a scenic eastern access point featuring a large, long lake in Algonquin's east side with close proximity to the spectacular Barron Canyon and High Falls areas. This intermediate route offers excellent opportunities for scenic paddling, wildlife viewing including moose, and hiking extensions like the famous Barron Canyon trail. Paddling is generally moderate with exposure to wind on open water, and historic Indigenous pictographs visible along shorelines add cultural significance. Summer is ideal, and the developed Achray Campground provides excellent base camping. The route attracts moderate crowds seeking accessible wilderness.
Access 18 (Grand Lake) is estimated at Intermediate. Whitewater ratings are not exact: grades change with water level and season. Verify current conditions locally before you paddle.
The best time is June-September.
