The Petit Mécatina River is one of Quebec's last great wild rivers, flowing 545 kilometers through pristine wilderness from Labrador to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This extremely challenging expedition-level route features a dangerous 15-kilometer canyon that Parks Canada described as 'very dangerous, even impassable.' The river offers spectacular wilderness scenery but requires expert whitewater skills, complete self-sufficiency, and floatplane access to remote headwaters. Multiple portages and difficult rapids characterize much of the route. Currently under threat from proposed hydroelectric development, this represents one of the most remote and challenging canoe routes in eastern North America.
The difficulty of Petit Mécatina River varies by section.
The best time is July-August.
Petit Mécatina River is located in the Côte-Nord region of Canada.
