The Bloodvein River flows through pristine wilderness from Ontario into Manitoba, offering one of Canada's premier wilderness canoe routes through UNESCO World Heritage landscape of ancient boreal forest and Precambrian Shield. This exceptional waterway features mostly Class I-II rapids with some technical drops, flowing through countless lakes connected by river segments with outstanding fishing, wildlife viewing, and camping opportunities. The route passes through both Woodland Caribou Provincial Park and eventually into Lake Winnipeg, providing diverse ecosystems and rich Indigenous cultural heritage. Best paddled from June through September with excellent access from Red Lake, Ontario. Multiple trip lengths possible from day trips to two-week expeditions.
